Mountain Development Scholarship – The Alpine Academy


The North Face Mountain Development Scholarship aims to break down barriers to entry in the outdoors, enabling exploration for mountaineers from all walks of life.

The North Face is a proud partner of Climbing the Seven Summits (CTSS), and we’re excited to offer two recipients of the Mountain Development Scholarship the opportunity to attend the Australian Alpine Academy in 2023.

The Australian Alpine Academy focuses on teaching the fundamentals of mountaineering and backcountry travel to prepare for bigger, more technical objectives abroad.

If there is someone in your life who would benefit from the opportunity to attend a course in 2023, we’re asking you to nominate them for a scholarship to participate in one of the following:

  • Australian Alpine Academy — Introduction to Mountaineering (10th – 13th August 2023)

  • All Women’s Australian Alpine Academy — Introduction to Mountaineering + Winter Summit Ascent of Mt. Kosciuszko (23rd – 26th August 2023)

Who should you nominate?


This scholarship is intended to provide an opportunity to someone who has faced barriers in gaining entry into the world of mountaineering or achieving their mountaineering goals, whether due to financial hardship or inequality of opportunity.

The programme is suited to people who have a good base level of fitness, beginner or intermediate mountaineering skills, and an adventurous mindset. Learn more about what to expect on the expedition here.

The Scholarship will include:


  • If out of state and required; travel to/from Guthega including flights to Canberra/Sydney and car hire.

  • Accommodation pre/post course in Berridale or Cooma.

  • A $1000 gift voucher from The North Face.

  • Gear hire including camping equipment.

  • All expedition meals.

  • 4 days | 3 nights Alpine Academy – Introduction to Mountaineering course, including: pre-trip briefing, snow shoeing, alpine safety, expedition & snow camping (site selection, tent set up, snow block walls, kitchen setup, camp hygiene), mountaineering skills – crampon technique, self-arrest training, climbing efficiency techniques, knots, hitches and rope craft, fixed line ascension, glacier travel, ice climbing (condition dependent), rappelling, crevasse rescue, snow anchors & running protection.

  • 4 days | 3 nights All Women’s Alpine Academy – Introduction to Mountaineering x Winter Summit Ascent of Mt. Kosciuszko, including: pre-trip briefing, snow shoeing, alpine safety, expedition & snow camping (site selection, tent set up, snow block walls, kitchen setup, camp hygiene), mountaineering skills – crampon technique, self-arrest training, climbing efficiency techniques, knots, hitches and rope craft, fixed line ascension, glacier travel, ice climbing (condition dependent), rappelling, crevasse rescue, snow anchors & running protection.
