Angie Scarth-Johnson
“Climbing has shaped me in many ways, it's more than a sport, it's a lifestyle and an attitude towards the outdoors. Through scaling walls I've learnt some of my most valuable lessons through persistence and dedication. It's a safe place for me, a place I feel most free. I'm constantly inspired by the possibilities and opportunities within climbing and its community.”
Angie started climbing when she was seven years old. By the age of nine she’d set the record as the youngest person to ever lead a Grade 31 climb – ‘Swingline’ at Red River Gorge, USA. A year later, at the age of ten, she became the youngest person to send a grade 32/33 — ‘Welcome to Tijuana’ in Rodellar Spain.
At the age of 18, Angie moved to Europe, where she currently lives, spending her time training hard to send high grade routes and connecting with her Spanish heritage.
In 2021, Angie became the first Australian woman to climb a grade 35/9a on Victimas del Futur and nine months later became the first female to successfully climb Victimas Perez (grade 35/9a) in Margalef, Spain - a route that requires consistent climbing on one and two finger pockets.
When back on home soil in Australia, Angie returns to her local crag in the Blue Mountains, visits family and gives back to the climbing community through workshops and mentorship for up and coming local climbers. Angie lead her first series of workshops with Affinity Initiative and ClimbingQTs in 2022, and will continue with the second series in 2023.
