Athlete tested, expedition proven. It was these four simple words that led to the first free ascent of Salathe, to the Karakoram Ski Traverse, to all 23 pitches of Alex Honnold's Half Dome free solo, and to Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk's summit of the Shark’s Fin of Mount Meru. Four words and 50 years of diving head first into the unknown. The North Face athletes have always been a propelling force of the brand, since its origin. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we take a look back at some of the expeditions over the years.
In 1966, a driven young climber tired of scavenging for quality gear from mail order and army surplus, took a few thousand dollars and created a global cultural institution. Since our Ruthsack revolutionized the backpack in 1969, our founder’s words and athlete feedback have kept us on the leading edge of outdoor apparel design. Check out the innovations that have been developed over the years.
